He started his career in 1991, when he appeared in a Action Romantic film “Phool Aur Kaante”. In 1992, he was seen in another action film “Jigar”. It became the seventh-highest-grossing film of that year, taking ₹7 crore (US$880,000) at the box office. In 1993, he was featured in 8 films “Dil Hai Betaab”, “Divya Shakti”, “Sangram”, “Ek hi Raasta”, “Platform”, “Shaktiman”, “Dhanwan”, “Bedardi”.

In 1994, he was casted in “VijayPath” and “Dilwale” where he portrayed the role of “Arun Saxena”. The movie was the tenth-highest-grossing movie of the year. Then he appeared in two other movies “Kanoon” and “Suhaag”. Suhaag was the seventh-highest-grossing movie of the year. Then in the same year, he appeared in “VijayPath”, it was the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year.

In 1995, he appeared in two movies “ Naajayaz and Hulchul”. Hulchul did not perform well at the box office. He then appeared in a film “Haqeeqat”. His next release was a  romantic comedy Ishq with Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol .In this successful film, Devgn played Ajay, a rich boy in love with a poor girl, played by Kajol. The film grossed ₹30 crore (US$3.8 million) and emerged as the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year. In 1998, he was Starred in “Major Saab”, where he played the character of an army officer.

He was then featured in a romantic comedy film “Pyaar to Hona Hi Tha” with Kajol . It grossed ₹30.25 crore (US$3.8 million).Devgn’s next release was a drama Zakhm, which examines communal tension in Mumbai during riots. Devgn played a man who is fed up with religious conflict. In 1999, he was starred in “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai as Co actors.

Then he was casted in “Hindustan ki Kasam”. He then appeared in “Kachche Dhaage”. Then he was seen in a romantic comedy “Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet”. In the following year, he was seen in many other movies such as Dil kya kare , Gair and ThakShak. In 2000, he appeared in two films “Deewane and Raju Chacha”.

In 2001, he was featured in two films “Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke” and “Lajja”.2002 proved to be a key year for Devgn as he starred in three films of contrasting genres. Devgn went on to perform in a film Deewangee. In 2003, he was starred in a horror film “Bhoot” and then he appeared in action thriller “Qayamat: City Under Threat”. He was then casted in a romantic film “Chori Chori”. He then appeared in Gangaajal ,Zameen,LOC Kargil. In 2004, he appeared in a Action film “Khakee”.

This film was released on 23 January 2004. It received positive reviews and became one of the highest-grossing films of 2004. In Khakee, Devgn once again played a villain. He then appeared in two movies “Masti and Yuva”. In the same year, he appeared in “RainCoat” and “Taarzan: The Wonder Car”. In 2005, he appeared in Kaal, Insan, Blackmail.

Devgn starred in Once upon a time in Mumbaai(2010), Golmaal 3(2010), Raajneeti (2010), Singham (2011),Bol Bachan (2012), Son of Sardar (2012), Singham Returns (2014) and Drishyam(2015). In 2011, Devgn performed with Emraan Hashmi in  comedy film Dil Toh Bacha Hai Jee.

In 2016, Devgn was seen in his own production,Shivaay. 2017, Devgn featured in Baadshaaho In 2018,He starred in De De Pyaar De alongside Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh. 2021, he starred  in the historical film, Bhuj: The Pride Of India and had a cameo in Sooryavanshi.

 2022, Devgn made his OTT debut with the web series, Rudra: The edge of Darkness. He was also seen in extended cameo appearances in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Khathiawadi and RRR, for which he received high praise.
