He started his acting career in 1970 , when he played the role of young Shashi Kapoor in a film “Tu Payal Mein Geet”. Then in 1979, he appeared in a film “ Hamare Tumhare”. Then in 1980 , he was starred in a Telugu film “Vamsa Vruksham”. In the following year, he appeared in two more films “Ek Baar Kaho and Hum Paanch”.
In 1983, he appeared in a film “Pallavi Annupallavi”. Then in 1984, he was starred in action drama “Mashaal”.
Then “Meri Jung” in 1985, Karma in 1986, Mr. India in 1987,Tezaab in 1988,Ram Lakhan in 1989.
Kapoor’s other commercially successful films include Beta (1992), Andaz (1994), Laadla (1994), Virasat (1997), Judaai (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997), Gharwali Baharwali (1998), Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999), Nayak (2001), and No Entry (2005). He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for playing an army man in Pukar (2000). Since 2005, he started working as a producer too He also won a Special Jury Award for producing Gandhi, My Father (2007).
